How the Internet Has Changed the Way I Eat
My mom loves to tell me this one particular story to illustrate how terrible she was at cooking. When I was born, my mom was the one who looked after me the most, therefore, whenever my dad didn’t have time, she was the one who made my meals. One day she decided on making rice. It’s quick and easy and hard to mess up. Once the food was ready, she sat me down and started to feed me. After one spoonful, I refused to continue. She desperately tried and tried everything she could to get me to open up and eat. She then decided to take a bite herself. She claims it was the worst thing she’s ever eaten. She then began to cry out of frustration. It’s a funny story now, but I’m sure she felt awful at that moment.
Luckily, things have changed for the better. Once she got her hands on a computer, she began looking up videos and recipes, and invested a lot of time learning. So much so, that she changed up the family’s diet. We significantly cut down on salt and sugar, and increased the vegetables and fruits. Whenever we sit down for dinner, she’s always explaining to us the benefits of the food she made. “The salmon has Omega-3 and helps lower blood pressure”, “the chickpeas contain magnesium, which is good for your heart”, the list goes on.

Recently, I discovered the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree. Cooking is definitely not my strong suit. As much as I try to memorize my mom’s recipes, or put into practice the cooking tips and tricks from my dad, I just can’t seem to put together a meal. But I can rest assured knowing that I’ll have the internet by my side to guide me along when I need help (as well as my parents of course!)
